There was a pretty interesting article in the Chronicle on Sunday about a Marin punk from back in the day who's moved onto bigger, if not necessarilly better, things. I don't feel OK about "outing" her under her old name, but she's probably somebody known to at least a few people here. Anyway, here's the article link:

  • Thank you PGW, whoever you are. What a crazy coincidence. I recently got in touch with an old friend from the scene & it got me thinking about other scholars who come from the old scene. That led me to ask another tribe member about Montgomery, who, shall we say, I knew & went to school with under another name. Well, he & another friend couldn't remember her last name. But here she is. And what's even wierder is that she teaches at the same university that my other friend is a Ph.D. student at. 6 degrees of separation. A very small world indeed. So thanks for making the post.

So was "Montgomery" always her name and she just wasn't using it when she was young?

"Thank you PGW, whoever you are."

This is Peter Werner – I knew you and John back in the 1980s. I used to live in Mill Valley, and was housemates with Jonathan Forman for a while. I'm now also a scholar, working on my Master's thesis in Biology at SFSU, "Psilocybe and allies of California".

        Peter!

It's me, Cheryl (also pseudonymed here.) You're not just Jonathan's housemate, you're PETER.

Wow. I was just emailing with Jiri, and your name came up. We were musing about a photo I have of you with Jiri, Frank, and Jonathan in Jiri's basement bedroom one night.

I'll email you off the board so we can catch up.

PS: I'm racking my brain because I know that "lady" Montgomery's face, but I can't remember who she was back then exactly. I've got a hunch though.

Thanks for refreshing my memory, Peter.
Of course, now I totally recognize her. She and I had some tension between us back then, but now I couldn't even tell you what happened. Just the haunting feeling that we came close to having a good dust up--feisty teenagers that we were!

There were a few people who she had some tensions with, though I remained on good terms with her.

We went to Tam High together – she was the first "real punk" I ever met. Even when she was 14, she already seemed like an "insider" to the SF punk scene.
            • Yay, Peter's back!

Yeah, I had some issues with her back in the day. Personality clash. Still, I always respected how smart she was. We just didn't like each other much.

Hey, I tried contacting you a couple of months ago to no avail. Mycology & ethnobiology/botany? Not at all surprising. I remember you digging up samples of decaying mushroom samples beneath John's parents' house after class one day because you thought they were interesting!

              Welcome!

I'm up for a party this summer. But for me, it's not just a punk reunion as much as an 80's friends gathering. All our post-punk friends have resurfaces this year too. Christian is ALL OVER having a party.

Where do we host it? We can have it at my weekender, of course. But I'm not sure if that's convenient for everyone. Could be fun though. We can go play in the river during the day, and have a barbeque and party at night, or do the gay bar thing downtown.

I'm taking vacation at the end of August, with tenative plans to go to Seattle for a friends birthday. But I'd cancel those plans if it meant seeing everyone. Sept 21-22 are good, too.

Let that be the last time you call it the "old fart" party. That sounds like something for aging hippies, and darlin' that just ain't a label I can hang with.

we have straight bars here too.....
and we are close enough for everyone....
and there's room for everybody between my house and yours...

                      oh....
and Juneko was the one that started the old fart thingy....

ok.... so are we just middle aged farts?????
for some reason I'd rather be old than middle aged.

Well doll, no one is saying you are middle-aged, and you can consider yourself "old" if you prefer that.

                        But I don't wanna'.
I still think of myself as young! I don't think old. Don't look old. And don't intented to identifiy with old.

Besides, you know the old axiom:
You can only be young once, but you can be immature forever. : p

Yet another early 80's North Bay punk chiming in.

I remember Montgomery for sure. It took me a while to figure it out though. Interesting the paths some people choose.
That was a long article... definitely mixed feelings but I'm happy that she's OK. It always makes me happy that another one of us survived!

It would really be cool to see everyone again. Now I'm *really* curious about the other people we knew. And I gotta find some of those old pictures. I even took a couple of super 8 movies...

Yeah baby. This is starting to look manageable. Also, there are uber-cute and affordable cottages for rent on my street, for couples that might want their own space. Starting at $100/nite.

montgomery seems to have a problem with her own memory, it wasnt a pregnant woman hitting a cop with an oar, the cops went to grab the oar and the dude let go of it sending them all flying in the mud etc.. Im not suprised she wants anthropology to be an integral part of our little so called existential war front, as its a common theme in the whole "cretins who dont have a use for civilization" variety they are always ramming down our throats with.. concider Tommy Franks statement about the danger of a possible move to change the anthropology of our society etc.. the problem is what if montgomery is on the wrong side of the oppressed- oppressor configuration.. I can imagine her in charge of some psychological experiment in a stalin styled gulag, talking highly about frustration theory applied to political malcontents...
