Flipper may not have been the best band name, but they inspired the best graffitti hands down. Anyone remember these classics:

i always thought that A3I was a good name (any three initials). i also used to like to mess with verbal abuse's and urban assault's names (verbal assault and urban abuse).

The Dead Kennedys is still one of the greatest names ever, still has the same gut-wrenching impact for non-punks. I wore an early button w/ a that newspaper photo of Lee Harvey Oswald (bought at the Compound) as a DKs button and almost got my ass kicked when I wore it into a cop bar (the Bus Stop on Union St).

I've noticed that band names have gone thru several stages- the early ones, many mentioned here, then a period when names got either too esoteric or just lame, and now, over the last 4-5 years, they've gotten more imaginative, harder edged.
I just realized that these episodes coincide with having Republicans in the White House.

Not an SF band, and slightly before my time, but Black Randy and the Metro Squad. I know next to nothing about them, but great name. Also, The Snot Puppies, who I know nothing about either. I remember when I was 11 or 12, well before I was going to shows, looking at the club listings in the back of the Pink Section and seeing an ad for The Screamers and The Snot Puppies and thought that sounded really cool. (I really wish I'd had a chance to see The Screamers back in the day. A lot of their stuff is only now turning up on YouTube and on mp3s and I like them a lot.) It probably was one of the things that planted the seed that got me into punk a few years later.

Flipper was always a source for good puns ("Flipper died for your fins") and their logo was iconic.

NON was a really great minimal name. I knew next to nothing about NON when I was into punk, though I got into it years later when I was more into industrial. I actually got to see NON once, briefly, during my punk days, but walked out on the performance because it was mainly Boyd Rice torturing the audience with bright lights and ear-splitting sound.

Early 80s-ish: The Pop Smears, which I always thought a cute name. Then they got a guy in the band, and changed the name to Post No Bills -- I'm amazed I remember that, come to think of it...

The Cheap Dates -- but that was a fuck band, mostly members of the Contractions.

Barking Spiders -- Biafra named them, I remember they had a full page ad in some magazine, maybe Creep? Barking Spiders, over and over, line after line, with a diagonal notice posted over it saying something like "Crawling your way soon!" Bobby Weaver was the singer, and I think that was just after he got out of jail.

Noh Mercy, which struck me as pretentious, and still does, but is still clever. Los Microwaves.

That's all I can remember right now -- but it is a fun subject. I'd forgotten a number of those names already mentioned, and am smiling at the memories.
