I'm pretty sure my first was to get outta san lorenzo and see NO ALTERTNATIVE play at barrington with casey, the only other punk from my school (arroyo high). that musta been around '80 or '81.

Re: Your first show?
Mon, November 1, 2004 - 2:14 AMi stood outside some great shows...
i spent some more in the bathroom...
i don't really remember actually being "at" any shows...
always outside, or in the bathroom.
i used to love the avengers, the dils (kinda), i super loved No alternative, The sleepers, The Buzzcocks/Gang of Four show was amazing (gang of four blew 'em away!) way, way back, i even liked the Mutants, the Noise, and the Lewd.
shit that was a long time ago.
My mother used to drive me to the show, and pick me up at midnight, "no later" or she would take my guitar away for a week.
hard to be a punk when you mom's outside in the volvo.

Re: Your first show?
Mon, November 1, 2004 - 11:23 AM1982 - Black Flag and the Fuck Ups at the Victoria Theater... Aaron Osier produced the show... my step father's band - THE NAKED LADY WRESTLERS were one of the opening bands. The bands played facing the backstage and the dressing rooms were where everyone was hanging out.
My step father's ex-wife, Linda (who used to book the Berkeley Square) and I went throught the whole club to see if I was the one with the longest hair in the venue. I was.
I wore a black satin jacket that looked like a motorcycle jacket and my best friend and I had written in gold pen on the back "David Bowie/Adam Ant the Ants/The Exploited/Charged GBH/Dead Kennedy's/etc...."
I remember one hardcore girl coming up and saying "Adam and The Ants shouldn't even be near the Exploited!"
What did I know?
The funnies part of the show was that we brought my aunt who was visiting from Ohio who sang in a country western band. -

Mon, November 1, 2004 - 9:18 PMLet's see, that was sooo many doses ago... ;)
The Circle Jerks, ("L.A.'s) Wasted Youth, The Lewd, Revenge and maybe someone else at Bleaks Hall (Underneath the Culinary Academy).
We then wandered over to Target and saw someone else (that I have no recollection of at all).
I believe this was sometime in 1980.

Re: Your first show?
Tue, November 16, 2004 - 9:43 AMMy 1st show was at Barrington Hall.
1979? 1980?
The Zeros
and
the Dead Kennedys
I saw a guy with glow-in-the-dark tennis shoes and thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen.
I saw the Talking Heads at sproul plaza with my mom in 1979, they didn't play Psycho Killer because of the Dan White riots earlier that week. Does that count? -
-
Re: Your first show?
Tue, November 16, 2004 - 3:03 PMOk - if we're counting the Talking Heads, I saw them at the Boarding House on Thanksgiving in 1979. There was a full dinner and then the band came out to play - I was 11. My parents are exceeded their cool quotient a long time ago. -

Re: Your first show?
Wed, December 15, 2004 - 10:13 PMI was in 7th grade and running around the streets at that age, I was with my cousin who was just getting into highschool and running around with the "tough" crowd. My parents and his had some function to go to, so that left us bored. His friends came by and they wanted to hangout outside this concert venue in the Fillmore dist. - of course I tagged along. It was Winterland and the band was the SEX PISTOLS.
Technically, we were only at the front door, but the crowd and the vibe struck a cord in me ever since. So my first "real" punk show was the DKs a few years later at my Uncle Ness' place the Mabuhay Gardens. (and yes, seriously, he was an 'uncle' -not by blood, but back then, all Filipinos that my parents knew, we called them aunts and uncles).
sorry for the "winded" post, but man are the memories coming back.

Re: Your first show?
Fri, February 18, 2005 - 8:30 PMIt has to be Flipper and Social Unrest in Sacramento or X and the Contractions at the On Broadway. no, probably the Contractions at the Berkeley Square. Gang of Four and Wall of Voodoo at the Kabuki, Black Flag at the On Broadway, the Mau Maus at the Fab Mab, etc. It must have been 1981/1982. When I moved to berkeley in 1983, we would see shows every weekend. I have photos of Stevo in the Vandals and Kid Congo Powers in Gun Club, but no scanner. 1983/4 Barrington Hall, Berkeley had quite the sub culture going. malcolm

Re: Your first show?
Sun, February 26, 2006 - 9:39 PMOk, I'm new here and just found the archive posts. So I'm bumping this up.
I'm a "2nd generation punk," because my first show wasn't until May of 1980. I wasn't skilled yet at taking the bus to the city yet. Yeah, bridge & tunnel crosser... figured out quickly though.
My first show was PIL, Flipper, and the Toiling Midgets at the ___ Cultural Center. Forget what it was called, but it's near the Galleria. I had been hanging out with some skater kids (Kathy & Kevin O'Connor, John Marsh, John, Joey) and at least THEY knew how to get to and around the city. What I loved about that first show was how friendly people were to me. I felt like a geek, since that's how I always felt, but everyone was so welcoming. I was really surprised by that. I remember that I was standing in line with Denz and he introduced me to people. It was great being 15 and exploring...everything was new. It was the first time that I fit in anywhere, or I rather I should say that fitting in didn't matter. We were all geeks and the rules were different. -

Thank you for making that distinction between shows and concerts. If I had to name one thing (just one) that made punk rock REVOLUTIONARY it's that the lines between performer and audience were blurred, if not erased. You did not need to be musically skilled to be in a band, you just needed to have the desire and willingness to act, usually prompted by having something to SAY (or not, as the case may be.) So yeah, it was shows not concerts.
I was as the X show at the Russian Center. One of the things I remember was that there were "new romantics" there en masse. Being the scrappy SF punks that we were, it was a bit head-turning. They were beautiful in their ruffles and bows (the men and the women.) But I remember thinking, "where did they all come from?" I was struck by their visual appearance. Then again, I also remember distinctly hearing Exene sing backwards when the pink gel finally kicked in. What a night. -

Fri, March 10, 2006 - 10:52 AMHey Guys - I remember that X show at the Russian Center. That nite my friends and I were introduced to the Pink Gel acid that sent us all to the loony bin. I remember walking thru the streets tripping like crazy and standing in a doorway for a shop called "echo" and we all stood and chanted "echo echo echo" like a bunch of whack jobs. Then we were walking on some more and a cop pulled up and asked if we were okay and we were all so high we could not respond. Somehow we did not end up in jail because that would have been a bad trip indeed. The other thing I remember about that night was that someone threw thier shirt up in the air during the show and it turned into a bird and flew away. I swear to god. Little g. -

Re: Your first show?
Sun, April 30, 2006 - 4:03 PMYeah--cops were following us because we were standing huddled close in a circle looking down at the ground. There was a rotten piece of food that was swarming with bugs. I always hallucinated crawling bugs and the rest of us were so high we couldn't figure out whether they were real or not. When we saw the cops, we started walking real fast trying to act 'non-chalant.' They yelled at us to stop & come over there. When we all started walking towards the cop car, one of them yelled "Halt! ONE of you come here now." So the guy we were with--Eric from LA--went over and somehow managed to convince the cop that we were just lost. They went on their way.
I remember the kid doing the robot ('wind me up') really freaked Frank out. Funny.

He flipped out a guitar pick, and, I swear to God this is true, it bounced off my heart... I patted around the ground desperately to find it for a minute and then decided even being touched by something that had touched Todd was enough.
The best was I came home and found the guitar pick in my purse. That thought took me through some dark days. :) -

Wed, March 8, 2006 - 10:48 PMCd's being so small, and mp3 players holding a minimum of 1,000 songs these days, the desert island list could have 1,000 titles on it.
why limit yourself to three? -

Re: Your first show?
Wed, March 8, 2006 - 10:54 PMI limit myself to three in my last holdout of masochism, okay? :) -

Re: Your first show?
Sat, March 4, 2006 - 8:10 AMGeez Rip,
I don't even remember playing there. Of course most of the 1980's are a blur. A tribute to better living through organic chemistry. My first show was the Hoi Paloi (misspelled). I was stunned that you could make noise and music at the same time. Their singer was so pale and skinny. Great role model.

Re: Your first show?
Tue, March 14, 2006 - 4:04 PMThe Ramones and The Red Rockers at the Warfield around 1980ish. Had to be right after End Of The Century was released so '80 would be correct. Great show and I got one of Johnny's picks that he flipped into the crowd. -

Re: Your first show?
Fri, March 17, 2006 - 8:59 PMI want to add a nice in the now moment to my first concert being Todd Rundgren.
I was in the supermarket today and they played his "I saw the light in your eyes" and at first I was smiling and then I was crying.
So... there you go and Happy St. Patty's.

Re: Your first show?
Wed, March 22, 2006 - 4:07 PMThe Nuns, Widowmaker and Dictators. late 76 or early 77 The Nuns blew both bands away first punk rock band I heard and it changed my taste in music. The Ramones may have played that show but I do not remember.

Re: Your first show?
Wed, April 26, 2006 - 11:58 AMIf anyone can remember that...they weren't drunk enough!! -
-
Re: Your first show?
Sun, April 30, 2006 - 4:16 PMOh yeah, I was pretty drunk AND I remember. I'm not sure if that's a blessing or a curse.
Dead Kennedys after hour show at the Hell Hole...the night of the infamous raid. Cheryl and I told our moms we were spending the night at each other's houses. We hung out at the Mab (that was the first time I saw the guy who stole my heart for a year Egan, from Half Moon Bay) then walked to the Hell Hole. All our friends were arrested that night. I remember seeing Jolie (JoEllen being led off in handcuffs). The rest of the night after that was spent in that lovely central bus terminal with some asshole talking nonstop while Cheryl and I were trying to fucking sleep on a bench.
Second show--Rat's Palace on Natoma, Halloween 1980. Black Flag, Impatient Youth, No Alternative, The Woundz, The Nubs ("Hey Folks, I just took a piss, I slit my wrists, I feel like a fish..."). It was my 14th birthday and it was where I first met Ken and Lafron Ifrom the East Bay, I think--what ever happened to them?), Lee Ann and Ethan. I distinctly remember lying on the hood of Lee Ann's little Fiat or what ever the hell it was.
Maud, damn girl, it's good to hear from you! -

Re: Your first show?
Tue, May 9, 2006 - 5:42 PMMy first show was X, Translator and the Uptones at the Kabuki in SF...I think it late 83 or early 84. My 2nd was the Clash, Los Lobos gig that was mentioned by someone earlier. -
-
Re: Your first show?
Wed, May 10, 2006 - 3:31 AMI remember that show! I hated the Kabuki(Bill Graham Productions) because of their two drink minimum policy... The Old Waldorf did that too... As a revovering alcoholic, it's kind of ironic that I was underage until '83 and they were pushin' the shit on you... Not that it mattered really, I was destined to do it anyway, along with all the other drugs... I'm lucky to be alive, like most of us on this tribe... -
-
Re: Your first show?
Wed, May 10, 2006 - 7:03 AMI remember those two drink minimums as well, and I was underage forever because I left home at 17... so I was ordering above high retail grapefruit juice for many years.

Re: Your first show?
Wed, May 10, 2006 - 2:15 PMI used to be queen of sneaking stuff in (although cause of my deep voice & big jugs I mostly talked my way into being over 21).... at The Old Waldorf I could always sneak 1/2 pint in.. so our two drinks would be sodas that we would spike... -

Re: Your first show?
Wed, May 10, 2006 - 4:07 PMIt's funny how your perception of yourself changes. I was so humiliated by being carded once that for me it was just easier to wait it out... and then on my birthday this year my sister gave me some $$$ to buy myself a bottle of champagne when I dropped her off at the airport. Went to Trader Joes and was semi CARDED (the manager came up to scold the very young man ringing me up for not asking for my ID.) I said, "I'm 43 YEARS OLD TODAY!"
The manager looked at me and said, "You do NOT look 43. Happy birthday to YOU!"
:) Made my year. -
-
Re: Your first show?
Thu, May 11, 2006 - 8:09 AMLast time I got carded was at the Zeitgeist where the bouncer informed me that he was doing me a "fucking favor" after looking at my birthdate. You gotta love the place, the warmth of it all...
OK so long as we're talkin' concerts in addition to shows, technically my first "concert" was in Disneyland with my family seeing Elvin Bishop (Fooled around and fell in love...). That was either '75 or '76. First REAL rock concert was Queen, Oakland Arena, 1977 with older sis. I was 10 years old. Tickets were $6 and we had great seats. My friends at the time, were all Queen fans and they were so jealous--refused to talk to me about it. The problem was that they were all the eldest siblings in the family, so they didn't get to go to concerts until they were much older.
Thank god for older siblings (mine were 8 & 10 years older than me) who lead us down the path of rock n roll temptation.

Thu, May 25, 2006 - 10:35 PMwont anybody cop to having seen the plasmatics? -
-
Re: Your first show?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 2:05 AMI never saw the plasmatics, never liked them... never thought wendy o'williams was a hottie, or that they were even a punk band. They sounded more like a big-time rock band to me. Only real "rock" band I ever liked was Motorhead.
But I did like how they did the "1-2-3-4" in Japanese. That was cool. -
-
Re: Your first show?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 8:24 AMI will cop to having seen the Plasmatics. At the Keystone Berkeley, probably in 80 or 81. They did the thing during "Butcher Baby" where they brought the TV on stage and she smashed it with a sledgehammer. They were like the Village People of punk; some enterprising manager type saw a movement, assembled a random group of people, got the costumes, and took that show on the road. Not so different from Bow Wow Wow or Adam and the Ants or Sigue Sigue Sputnik, or (heresy!) the Pistols, really (because McLaren really is the master of this particular swindle), but without the sense of humor. And like Rob says, the Plasmatics were a boring band to listen to. -
-
Re: Your first show?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 8:32 AMI was going to say "I LOVE Adam and the Ants", but now I can't think of a single song except his hit (and I don't even want to name that before googling it after thinking recently that The Cars were responsible for "My Sharona"!)
I loved the name of the band Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
And I really didn't care if the Sex Pistols were a swindle. Or punk for that matter. I just liked them for everything, McLaren, fashion and all.

Re: Your first show?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 8:57 AMOMG Sigue Sigue Sputnik! I have great pics of them from the Stone.... Shoot it up... Shoot it up...... oh hell no. Elaine you rock my world! Now I can get that damn Bon Jovi song out my head! -

Re: Your first show?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 12:04 PMThe first "band" I ever saw was when me and my buddy Timmy cut class to go see Yesterday and Today play at lunch time in the quad of a Hayward high school. I think I was either in 7th or 8th grade.
My first punk show was Social Unrest, Impatient Youth and Antrax at Weeks park rec center in Hayward.
Myself and the people I went with all had to run home because the local gang bangers were cruising around looking for punks to beat up. During the show they got a hold of one guy and worked him over pretty well.
The stuff we had to deal with for being a punk.......

Re: Your first show?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 8:30 PMI saw Adam and the Ants open up for Siousxie and the Banshees. To be fair, they were ok. Nothing amazing, kinda singy-songy. The moment was when someone hawked up a nice loogie and spit it on Adam's leather pants. He stopped, and dabbed his pinkie into the spit, tasted it, and then said "Oh honey, that went out years ago..." and then went into the next song.
I frowned, and acted like he sucked, but that was a pretty smooth move if you ask me. -

Tue, December 30, 2008 - 10:52 PMmy first punk show was the sex pistols at winterland w/the avengers and the nuns....my first show ever was kiss w/cheap trick at the cow palace....and i hated the plasmatics(if they came out today ...i would be convinced they were formed by hot topic) .. and to add insult to injury, their name replaced "devo" and "faggot" as the word of choice for meatheads to shout out of their cars at me and freinds...for me, their music sucked and i always thought wendy o williams was butt ugly
