Faggot?

In response to Cheryl's hilarious story about Frank's dad in a panic over his hair being pink, I thought this one might be interesting too:

Remember the late 70's - early 80's? Do you? Remember how things shifted the further away from the city you got?

I took one of my first field trips in late '79 with a friend. We went on Bart to Concord to check out this leather shop where they were supposed to have wrist bands and studs and things which weren't "cock rings" (we were slightly homophobic ourselves in those days.)

We stepped out of the station into Condordland, and found ourselves in bright sunlight with out heavy jackets (his leather, mine rubber) neon yellow pants, a magenta t-shirt, huge cowboy boots draped in dog chains, and my brown matted vaseline hair stiicking up everywhere.

Smelled like trouble.

"Hey faggot!" we hear from behind us.

Well, we were thinking lowriders, gang members, wife beater wearing guys with chains in hair nets, something frightening. But when we turned around to see who was shouting at us we found a grown man, maybe 30, in tight jeans, a skin tight v-neck shirt, a big huge chrome belt buckle, cop sun glasses, close cropped hair, and a massive handle bar moustache.

"faggot?" I said.

"Yeah! You little faggots!" he shouted. "Go back to Faggot-land!"

We laughed. But we did, indeed, get back on the Bart train and forgot all about the non cock-ring variety of leather wrist bands.

Thing is, that guy looked like the lead singer from the Village People. He looked like FreddyMercury's cousin. He looked like all the nice men who were taking such good care of me on Polk street back then. Who was this man, this man wearing the costume of a weekend top, looking for love? Why was he shouting "Faggot" at us?

We were very confused.

In hind sigh, I think he was just jealous, and felt that our presence in Concord, land of the hard, the muscle car, permenant home of Foreigner's fan club, we were some how outing him, threatening to expose his look.

I know people have a lot of persona problems, and often sexual identity is one on the hardest to come to terms with. I've had my own issues with this, and can understand. But something I'll never really be able to get my head around is the image of this full grown man dressed like a biker queen yelling "Faggot" at me and Mike in the 90 degree Concord sun.

This was the first time I noticed this irony, and we talked about it in our early teen-age way, but there was more. Lots more. Whenever I heard "Faggot" shouted at me from behind over the following years, it was almost always from the mouth of a cop with a huge moustache, some guy in skin tight jeans presenting his package (I suppose he imagined) to the ladies, or a young, confused boy who probably wanted to caress my face sweetly, and share his innermost expression of himself with me.

I liked punk better when we were walking challenges to people's bullshit.

What's your faggot story?

Funny, I never really dressed punk, and went to a lot of shows at the Mab, Sound of Music, and everywhere else... I always got into shit with the PuNks, because, I didn't look like them... I remember getting harrassed all the time when I walked by Buena Vista Park, and the pussy skins(always a pack) would throw names and bottles at me. One time, I pulled out my pistol(yeah, I carried), and pointed it their way, only to watch them run like a bunch of scared little kids... Another time some drunk punks jumped me and my friend down the hill on Broadway after a show. I remember slicing my hand real good on one of their tall boy Bud cans trying to protect myself...needless to say, a jack boot to the face is not fun, nor pretty the next morning...

            oh... CHEEZ MAN!!!! poor kid...

i was at Hill jr. High in Novato in '77 and before i was "saved by Rocky Horror"
i was kinda already a stoner/rock & roll chick.. wearing black nail polish & had a band t-shirt for everyday of the week... Tom Petty, Stones, Areosmith, Rod Stewart...

then i saw "Rocky" the first time(with my Mon).... after seeing it the 2nd... I dyed my hair with red food coloring, started wearing HUGE amounts of make-up, fishnets and platforms.
so people started picking on me at a pretty young age...
THEN we moved to Petaluma ~ the best part of this whole era... i was still showing quarter horses at the Jr. Grand National & stuff~
the first day of fressman oriantation at Pet. High I had dyed my hair with red henna that morning with the idea that no one would know... well... i was unaware of the fact that i had previously... lighten my hair the last time i had dyed it....
            AHHH the glow of henna!!!
my hair kept getting brighter & brighter as it dried... the red ncek farmers were having a field day....
thats when they started calling me a Rocky Horror transvestite.....
i mean come on.... the only men's underwear I wear are long johns....

i'm sure they called me a fag also.... them football players weren't all that bright... and i'd probably still pay $50.00 to see one of them take it up the ass!!!

In my early life, before punk rock, before puberty, "fag" and "faggot" was a popular name for me too. Lots of young, athletic type boys really loved to chase me, grab me, touch me, and hold me tightly, and lift me, throw me, or taunt me.

Over the years I have to admit that I've ran into many of them, at least 6 that I can think of, in interesting situations (like the Gay Pride Parade or dancing at the Stud) where they have each admitted how desperately in love with me they were when we were kids.

There's something to that J'ellin, you are definitely on to something.

We've got a strange way of sharing and showing love, haven't we?

fortunatly i got over the "cute junkie boy" thang......
with my last "cute junkie boy"
he was sooooo cute when HE thought we should go cop... HE was soooo cute that time he borrowed my pick-up & dog and lost them both cause the dope I WAS paying for that he "wasn't going to do" until he came back somehow got stuck in his arm.... and somehow he wondered off... got beat up...... and couldn't find the truck or MY dog.... 3 days later i found Daizey at the SF SPCA.... at least HE had left the windows rolled down, so someone could save my dog....

                    RIP Dusty!!

glad your not a cute little junkie anymore Rob!

Having spent a large part of my youth in Vacaville ( aka Vakacraka )
I was called faggot a lot. But I couldn't get angry at what was essentially
an accurate observation. But of course me being raised by New Yorkers
I ain't one to put up with assholes. So I'd yell back..."IT'S MISS FAGGOT TO YOU!
AND MISTRESS FAGGOT TO YOUR FRIEND...NEEDLEDICK !!! "
                      That usually shut them up.

are you kidding? Terra Linda High in 1978-79! It was either faggot or "orgo" which I never understood, but though had something to do with "organic?" I'm sure I didn't resemble a hippie in any way at that time. I still wonder. T.L. was such a dump, and still is. Petaluma though, wow...!

I used to get called faggot all the freakin time in Novato. It was the crew cut, shades & leather jacket.
I just used to tell them to suck my dick.

My favorite one that Jody and Cheryl and I used to get alot was "punk rock dyke whore" after which I'd tell them to suck my dick--then they'd look confused--and then upset when we'd tell them we were more man than they were.

Oh man WPODs, I was massivly rat packed by them, still have nerve damage in my face from that experience, I had been selling sandwiches and beer with Dave MDC at some concert at speedway meadows. After it was over I went to catch the bus these POD boys pull up in their van take one look at my maroon hair jump out of their van and beat me into unconciousness not a good experience.

I also remember going to Chino Valley Arizona with an old girl friend of mine to stay with her mom chill out etc. I went to the local bar to buy a case of beer (the bars name was the log cabin). It was just like a movie I walk in with puple hair in all my punk rock glory and the bar goes dead silent, the bartender then says oh he's alright he's staying with the Mcleves. I walk out of the bar with a case of beer put it in the back of the car turn around and there are two cowboys, full fledged shit kickers, standing there. The first words out of their mouth are "what are you some kinda faggot with all those earrings" I say "no I'm not gay", they then ask " where you from" they were taking on postures that said they wanted to kick my ass, so I looked at them without batting an eyelash smiled and said "I'm from San Francisco is that a problem?" and started walking towards them it was at that point they decided I was totally insane and high tailed it out of there :>)

There is an interesting twist to that story about pink-haired homophobia...

Maybe a year or so later, after Frank's mom left his dad, we went and cheered for her as she was straddled tightly on the back of her new girlfriend in the Dykes on Bikes parade on Gay Pride Day.

She was one of those people who comes out of the closet fast and unexpectedly. Frank didn't take it very well at the time. Triggered him when his mom changed her identity.
